What was the Auto de Posesion?
On March 5th, 1731 the Franciscan Friars at Missions Espada, San Juan, and Concepcion carried out a decree to transfer over the ownership and management of all the lands and property to the Mission Indian communities. At that time, at San Juan Capistrano, it included the Venado and Tilijae tribes who were given authority of the land. Four days later, the Canary Islanders arrived.
American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions hosts a dozen Indigenous Art events throughout the year, thanks in part to the City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture, The San Antonio Area Foundation, the Texas Commission on the Arts and kind supporters like you!
The event is free and open to the public! Find out more about our programs and other opportunities to network with the Native American community of San Antonio by getting in touch.
