Wayward son comes home for a Texas tour to play his legendary father’s music in October 2019
It’s been 9 years since Shandon Sahm has donned his silver boots to stand front and center as a solo artist and he is bringing his act back to Texas for a one month tour in October in support of his “Sahm Covers Sahm” CD.
He’s playing songs from Doug Sahm’s legendary career that spans over 50 years of great music; songs that range from Doug’s early “She’s About a Mover” period to his groovy San Francisco “Mendocino” era to the Texas Tornados music that is rooted in a cross cultural mix that can only happen here in Tejas. (Hey Baby, Que Paso, anyone?) This music is beloved worldwide and is coming back home in a very special way.
Shandon describes it is as “Arena Glam Folk Rock” and that’s exactly how I remember his solo act, a bizarre mix of Iggy Pop and Kiss but with the eerily familiar visage and voice of his legendary father. The younger Sahm walks, talks and sings like all of his influences all at once.
He started his own music career in San Antonio as the drummer for Pariah. Shandon spent many years as a member of Meat Puppets, worked with Gibby Haynes and “His Problem” and also recorded a couple of albums as a solo artist. His prolific career includes a long list of sessions, recordings, albums and tours.
Shandon’s brief return to Texas before he goes back to Amsterdam, his new home since January 2018, beautifully completes the circle. He was forced to sell his home in Austin because of skyrocketing taxes and looked for somewhere else to live. (Hello Amsterdam....) Our beloved bohemian traveler seems to be having the time of his life; but Texas is where the story begins.
