This is an online course. You can take this anywhere you have an internet connection. You do not have to be present in our area to take the course!
The Integumentary (Skin) System for the Herbalist: “Identifying and understanding acute and chronic illness of the skin”
The integumentary module (one of the pathophysiology modules) is an in-depth study of the physiology and pathophysiology of the skin – from the standpoint of the clinical herbalist.  This often includes infections or disorders that do not originate in the skin but present themselves on the skin.
This 4-week, integumentary module is packed with information to introduce you to the anatomy and physiology of all layers of the skin (epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous) as well as the physiology of disease as it occurs or presents itself through or on these layers. How can we understand the integumentary tract from the standpoint of herbal medicine, and what information do we need to know specifically as a clinical herbalist when dealing with skin disorders?
Another aspect of understanding skin diseases is in the identification.  Here there is often much confusion at the clinical level, especially if it may not be possible to rely on lab tests or we know that lab tests may not actually address underlying causes.  This course will also focus on identifying many of the most common skin ailments found primarily in the USA.
Aside from addressing symptoms and root causes of the integumentary tract and will also present a materia medica (specific herbs) as well as preparation/administration of those herbs in order to most effectively help the body heal itself when facing these disease processes.
Both acute and chronic skin disease will be addressed in this class, as well as underlying causes and organ systems affecting the skin directly or indirectly.
· Acute skin infections (staph, MRSA, cellulitis, impetigo, cold sores, hives, warts, ringworm & other fungal infections, rashes, erysipelas and more)
· Chronic, auto-immune and other re-occurring skin disorders (eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, vitiligo, hypohidrosis, herpes-virus related, acne and more )
Specific relationships between nutrition, lifestyle and skin disorders will be emphasized as well.
Each pathophysiology module now includes an optional medicine making option for all students who want to participate.  This will be an exercise that helps students to use their materia medica for the course and create a formula that is specific to what is learned in the course.
